DUAL DRAGONS TAEKWON-DO BLACK BELTS
I started tkd about 6 yrs ago just to see what it was all about. At the time I was playing hockey and I didn't have time to take tkd very seriously. After a couple of years I had to choose between tkd and hockey. I chose tkd and I'm extremely happy I did. I wouldn't be testing for black belt if I had done hockey would I? Tkd has been a huge part of my life, not just in the dojang, but it has also given me confidence and discipline in everything I do.
After a few years spent training in karate I moved from my home town to Stettler. From there it seemed only natural that I should eventually get involved with martial arts again. So after a year or two I decided TaeKwon-Do might just be right for me. All in all it would take some 6 years, minus a few summers and two broken toes, of training to obtain my black stripe. Of course all this time could have been drawn out even longer if not for my instructor, Dave Hargreaves. Training wasn’t always easy but he was always there to help correct my mistakes and push me in the right direction. Through test after test, he helped me climb the ranks to where I am now. With my fellow students always there to help or to challenge me further I attended tournaments, and training camps. It was at my first such tournament, where I fought a particularly invigorating sparring match against a spiky-haired kid in Camrose that I really began to realize that I wanted to go all the way with this. Due to certain injuries, however I couldn`t always progress as fast as my class mates but that hasn`t stopped me from coming as far as I have. Of course without my instructor to help me through such times it all could have gone even more slowly, or even not at all. As I receive the honour of being among the very first Dual Dragons black-belts it seems that I was right in thinking that this TaeKwon-Do thing might just be right for me in the end.
I began taking martial arts over 20 years ago in Kuk Sool Won. Due to work and family commitments I had to quit. In 2003 I had the opportunity to start Unified Tae Kwon Do. The last 4 years have been under Mr. Hargreaves. The biggest highlight of my martial arts training was being able to test for my black belt with my son, a real testament to the family orientation of UTI. I am very honored to be one of the first black belts under the new Dual Dragons School.
I started TKD 3 years with my daughter, looking for something I could do with her. It didn’t take long before I was hooked. The physical and mental aspect of TKD has greatly challenged me and has made me a better person overall. My three kids and my wife all now participate in TKD and it has been something that has brought us all together. Mr. Hargreaves runs an excellent school and it has become part of my extended family. I also greatly enjoy the opportunities that have been given to me to instruct at the school. TKD is and will continue to be a large part of my life.
Fifteen years ago I studied another martial art. After numerous negative experiences I stopped training. Five year after moving to Stettler, my friend, Will brown, began training here. He loved it and began to advance in rank. After meeting Mr. Hargreaves, I decided to try TaeKwon-Do for myself. I began with a goal - black belt in 3 years. Thanks to the incredible instruction from all of the black belts here, I achieved my goal...in 2 years. TaeKwon-Do has become a family event with three of my kids joining too, and it has allowed me to form some great friendships. What a difference from my first experience in martial arts! I look forward to years of training as a member of Dual Dragons.
